Shelby Daytona

The Shelby Daytona was built for auto racing, specifically to take on Ferrari and its 250 GTO in the GT class. Just six Shelby Daytona Coupes were built between 1964 and 1965. The first Shelby Daytona Coupe was built at the Shelby American race shop in Venice, California. The remaining five were built at Carrozzeria Gransport in Modena, Italy. The first built, chassis CSX2287 won the GT class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 1964.
All trace of CSX2287 was lost by the mid-1970s, with many fearing the car had been destroyed. In 2001 the car was rediscovered in a rental storage unit in California. The owner had committed suicide by burning herself alive.
CSX2287 is the only Daytona which has not been restored. The car was mechanically reconditioned and resides at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia. It's estimated at well over $4m.
The cars were powered by a 4.7 liter V8 producing 385 hp mated to a 4 speed manual transmission. Top speed was 191 mph. The car helped Carroll Shelby build his name and legend.
